Frequently Asked Questions

What is Alternatober?
Alternatober is a month-long art challenge that encourages all mediums and all skill levels. While other challenges are restricted to a specific medium (such as ink, paint, or sketches), this challenge invites everyone to exercise their creativity with whatever and however they choose.

Why a month-long challenge?
A month-long challenge gives time to build a habit of creativity. It’s also a lot easier to make a fun name like ‘Alternatober’ than “multi-day challenge of an unset duration and time frame.”

How do I sign up?
You’re welcome to save a copy of the prompts and do your own thing, or you can join us on Facebook or Instagram to connect with other artists. There’s no online portal or sign-ups for this challenge.

Do I have to pay anything?
Alternatober is free.

What type of art is permitted?
Any and all forms of creative skill are welcome. Participants have done drawing, painting, digital art, collage, and writing. As long as you are creating and expressing yourself, it’s allowed.

Do I have to choose one style of art?
No. Some people stick with a single style to practice and build up skills and techniques. Others choose to explore new styles of art. Whatever you are inspired to do is what you should choose.

Do I have to make something every day?
In a perfect world, everyone would have time to do all the things they wanted to each day. Since life isn’t perfect, just do what you can. If you miss a day, pick it up the next day. If you can only do a few days, that’s more than you would have done if you didn’t take on the challenge.

Is my art good enough to participate?
Yes! This challenge is for all skill-levels, from beginner to expert.

What are bonus prompts? How do I use them?
Sometimes a prompt won’t spark anything for you. Sometimes, neither of the two prompts for the day will click. As an alternative, you can select a bonus prompt to replace any pronpts that aren’t working for you.

Who runs this challenge?
Alternatober is created and run by Siobhan Armstrong.
