The Rules
Alternatober is simple. Every day in October, there are two prompt words for you to choose from. Pick whichever one inspires you most and use it to inspire your creativity.
When you finish your creation, upload it to social media with the hashtag #alternatober.
If you feel stuck, you can reach out to the Alternatober community for inspiration.
FAQ
What do I use for this challenge?
Whatever you use to create is the right stuff. Everyone is different, so pick what you feel is right for you. Some suggestions you can consider include drawing, painting, sculpting, papercrafting, makeup, dancing, sewing, writing, cooking, Legos, jewelry making, knitting…
Do I have to participate every day?
The goal is to encourage you to think creatively and express yourself, not to stress you out. Do what you can. If you need a break, take it.
Where do I find the prompts?
The prompts can be found in a handy calendar we put together for you. You can also find them on our social media each day.
What if I don’t like either prompt word?
That’s a-ok! The challenge is supposed to be fun. There are a few bonus words you can slot in at will, or you can make up your own word for the day instead.
Is there a prize for finishing?
Aside from the feeling of a job well done? Bragging rights? New connections with other creative people? A slew of new art made by you? Nothing concrete, but something could be in the works.
Does it cost anything to join?
No, Alternatober is free to participate in.
Do you have any ownership of the things I create for the challenge?
No, you keep your copyright. Everything you create is yours alone.
Why is it called “Alternatober”?
Two reasons: first, because of the alternative prompts available each day. Second, because it is an alternative to other challenges that have taken place in October that have had some unfortunate drama.
Will this happen again next year?
If it’s successful, sure thing!
Where can I see what other participants created?
We encourage all participants to join us on our Facebook group, and to share their creations there. Follow the hashtag #Alternatober on Instagram to see what people post there.
